Toolkit Overview

Starting in 2027, a new federal law will require some adults with Medicaid to complete and report work, school, work program or volunteer activities to keep their health coverage. These new rules are called work requirements, or community engagement requirements.

Who May Be Affected

Some adults ages 19-64 who are not enrolled in long-term services and supports or Medicaid buy-in programs, have a disability, health condition, or other circumstances will need to comply with Medicaid work requirements.

Learn more about who may not need to meet Medicaid work requirements at HealthFirstColorado.gov/Changes/Work.

Starting January 1, 2027, some adults may need to show work, school, training, or volunteer activities to keep their Health First Colorado Medicaid coverage. These are called work requirements.

These changes don’t apply to everyone. Many people, including caregivers, people with disabilities, those enrolled in Medicare or SSI/SSDI, and others, may not need to take action. This is not a complete list.

What you can do now:

  • Update your contact information so Health First Colorado can reach you
  • Watch for official notifications this fall and respond by the deadline
  • Visit HealthFirstColorado.gov/Changes for the full list and anonymous screening tool

Starting January 1, 2027, a new federal law referred to as “work requirements” will require some adults with Medicaid to complete and report work, school, work program or volunteer activities to keep their health coverage.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has its own work requirement rules that are more detailed than Medicaid’s.
